Dua Lipa & BLACKPINK – ‘Kiss And Make Up’
A year ago, I jumped the gun and called Dua Lipa’s self-titled debut “shimmering pop perfection”. Fortunately, her subsequent ascent to undisputed Queen of Pop has shown us that she’s capable of far greater things than we could ever have imagined.
The newly extended version of Dua Lipa offers us three sparkling new songs, each teeming with the same damn good pop that has made her a worldwide name. Given her global appeal, it’s fitting that the boppiest of the lot is a bilingual track with K-Pop stars BLACKPINK. ‘Kiss And Make Up’ is traditional Dua: an electropop banger with supreme vocals from all involved.
In contrast, there’s a charming simplicity to ‘Running’, a catchy ballad that lets Lipa’s vocal talents shine. ‘Want To’ is the loudest of the trio, an empowered feminist anthem which reminds us that nobody can tell the Queen how to wear her crown. Tacked on the end are Dua’s recent megahits – ‘One Kiss’, a funky Calvin Harris collab that spent eight weeks at no.1, and ‘Electricity’, a euphoric vintage house bop produced by Silk City.
Now with the added oomph of two of the biggest successes of 2018, Dua Lipa is certainly cemented one of the strongest debuts in pop history. This time, however, I’ll refrain from calling it perfection. The best is still to come.
