Weslee – ‘Sweat Dreams’
When the BBC’s Sound of 2019 longlist was unveiled yesterday, one name I was very disappointed and surprised not to see adorning it was the mysterious transatlantic duo Weslee. After all, Radio 1’s MistaJam premiered their debut single ‘Gassed’ in the coveted Hottest Record In The World slot, Annie Mac had them playing her AMP night at Camden’s Jazz Café alongside Sunflower Bean and Jessie Ware as their first ever live performance, and literally every single track they’ve put out so far – ‘Gassed’, ‘Bathwater’, ‘Boy Like You’, and June’s 9F EP, named for singer Emma DD’s favourite plane seat – has been some tremendous combination of electronic magic, dreamy R&B vocals, and razor-sharp lyricism.
Anyway, as if to remind us all that they mean business and are easily one of the most likely acts to do something bloody incredible in the new year, perky 9F cut ‘Sweat Dreams’ now finally gets the video treatment, and thus an excuse for me to rave about it after six months of mild obsession that’s got Spotify (accurately) reckoning it’s one of the year’s best records to my ears.
PS: If this somehow doesn’t win you over then how about the fact that THEY’RE NAMED AFTER A TURTLE???? Good band, this.
