Fieh – ‘25’
The more eagle-eyed among you may have noticed our jaNEWary playlist – if a music site doesn’t club together to celebrate and hype new names at the start of the year, does it even exist? – technically broke official bop 40 rules by having, well, 41 tracks. That was thanks to the frustratingly furtive forest funk flock Fieh, who popped out two singles four months apart a year ago and then vanished without much of a trace, leaving us only with fond memories of a thrilling young band who (if not for Sigrid and that ‘Don’t Kill My Vibe’ magic) would have easily romped away with accolades for ‘Glu’ being the best introduction all about majestically flipping off condescending old blokes in recording studios, let alone when it comes to acts hailing from rural Norway during the year of 2017.
Today, however, their roll to world domination fieh-nally kicks off in earnest, with last February’s stress-absorbing wizardry ‘25’ appearing in all the usual places as the band celebrates their Decca debut with a splash of new cover art. Here, singer Sofie Tollefsbøl sounds wonderfully composed at the front of affairs, offering such a comforting tone (“Stressing out’s a full-time job / I am on it baby”) that it’s rather tricky not to simply shed all your anxieties within 30 seconds of hitting play, while the seven-part self-proclaimed “something-funk-neo-disco-rap-soul???” ensemble around her gently drizzles in all sorts of luscious, soothing instrumentation.
The gang’s website currently houses not all that much beyond some vivid pictures and an oral history of how they came to be – including dating ‘25’ itself all the way back to their first shows in 2014 and alluding to something by the name of Cold Water On Burning Skin, which sounds a lot like an album title to these infatuated ears – but it’s still very early days, so hopefully this is their first of many bop drops for this summer. In the meantime, if this has whet your appetite nicely, we managed to sneak into their inaugural London headline show in Hackney’s Paper Dress Vintage last month and caught the very best bits of an unsurprisingly sumptuous sell-out over on our Instagram story. Be warned, this footage may well contain flugelhorns, Wurlitzers, and a beret.
